He’s Coming Back Soon
What are you waiting for? See, there’s an interesting practice to waiting. Usually, as we wait, we’re also preparing ourselves. This could be preparing to receive something, or getting ready to go somewhere, there’re plenty of different examples. The important point is that we know what we’re waiting for.
I’m sure you’ve heard before the need to know your why. As the why makes your what (what you’re doing) that much more meaningful. When we lose sight of our why, we become less pointed and more susceptible to burnout and quitting.
The Bible is filled with charges to remain faithful, to continue, to be holy and blameless. These aren’t always easy ways of life. In order for them to be performed, they take attention and intention. And if we forget why we’re practicing these things in the first place, we’ll fall away due to the cares of the world – just as we’re told in the Parable of the Sower and the Seed (Matthew 13).
What is our why? What are we waiting for as believers? We’re waiting for Him to come back. Our faith is built on the promises of God. And Jesus has promised us that He will return. In the words of Jesus, “Behold, I am coming soon” (Revelation 22:12). And again, “Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect” (Matthew 24:44).
We are waiting for Jesus’ return. Peter tells us, “While you are waiting for these things to happen, make every effort to be found living peaceful lives that are pure and blameless in His sight” (2 Peter 3:14). That’s our why as Believers.
I must confess, I so often lose sight of this truth. It’s all too easy to forget that Jesus is truly coming back. It’s a practice I must remind myself with frequency, otherwise I get carried away by the cares of the world.
Friend, do you keep the return of Jesus on your mind? We ought never lose sight of His pending return. Because we’re warned by Jesus Himself, “Watch out! Don’t let your hearts be dulled by carousing and drunkenness, and by the worries of this life. Don’t let that day catch you unaware” (Luke 21:34).
Jesus is warning us to stay awake and aware. This world will try to dull our awareness of His reality so as to keep us from living a life of preparation and expectation for Him. We’re called to have faith, and “faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see” (Hebrews 11:1). This is not an easy way of life, but it’s what we’re called to because we trust and believe that at Jesus’ return there will be a new heaven and a new earth that we are to dwell with God.
Friend, this is not our home. We weren’t made for the brokenness of this sinful world. We were made for righteousness and oneness with our Creator. And in the meantime, we are to continue on our path of sanctification, or becoming like Jesus, here today. Why, because we know and remember what it is we’re waiting for. We’re waiting for our King to return – and He’s coming back soon.
